New Designer Spotlight: Olgana Paris

$

Olga Djanguirov, a former art dealer who studied at L’École du Louvre, has a new passion: footwear.

While she quietly launched her collection — Olgana Paris — last year, the designer has gained momentum for fall ’15.

The luxury line, which features intricate details and Italian craftmanship, has been picked up by several notable retailers. It will be stocked by Barneys New York, London-based Matches, Yoox’s Shoescribe, Montaigne Market, Dover Street Market, Hirshleifers and Maxfield.

During a recent preview in Paris, the designer said she aims to make high-quality, timeless designs. “I am really in love with the history of ‘Made in Italy,'” she said.

Djanguirov was one of the few new names to make a splash in Paris this season. In Milan, Giannico — launched by 19-year-old Nicoló Beretta — was cited as a standout. But overall, several retailers noted that there was a lack of emerging talent during fashion month.

Meanwhile, rising stars like Paul Andrew and Aquazzura’s Edgardo Osorio continue to generate major buzz as they build their businesses.

For Olgana Paris, it’s all about the details. Designer Olgana Djanguirov — who is on several buyers’ lists as a name to watch — continued to broaden her assortment with spring 2016.

From embellished evening styles to her La Masque T-bar pump in black leather and pony hair, Olgana Paris has plenty of statement styles for the new season. The designer’s favorite? “Le Masque (see above) because it is both classical and wild. It is a timeless model but modern style, like the women of today.”

But Djanguirov also is offering a plethora of pretty mid-heels and flats, mirroring a broader trend in the luxury market. While many high-end designers were slow to embrace lower heel heights early in their careers, it’s a smart move for Djanguirov to include so many wearable styles alongside her ‘wow’ pieces.

“We like her approach to evening and cocktail-shoe dressing, which is very romantic,” said Tomoko Ogura, senior fashion director at Barneys New York.

In addition to Barneys, the label is stocked at Montaigne Market, Dover Street Market, MatchesFashion.com, Level Shoe District in Dubai, Moda Operandi, 4Kuwait and Hirshleifers, among others. All told, Olgana is sold in 15 countries globally.

Djanguirov, a former art dealer who studied at L’École du Louvre, told FN earlier this year that she is passionate about “Made in Italy” footwear and the history of Italian shoemaking.

“The spring collection remains faithful to the main principles of Olgana Paris which are femininity, elegance and timelessness,” the designer said. “But we have reached a new horizon: bringing out the feline side of women. All the models of this collection are still timeless and contemporary but with a twist of eccentricity, especially in the colors.”

Olgana Paris Launches Bridal Collection

The bridal market continues to heat up, with more designers adding wedding collections to their offerings. The latest to enter the mix is Paris-based Olga Molbieva Djanguirov, who launched her Olgana collection of highly detailed heels in 2014 and has now added a special White Tie assortment of nuptial-ready styles for spring ’16.

The label is sold at Barneys, Montaigne Market, Dover Street Market, MatchesFashion.com, Level Shoes District in Dubai, Moda Operandi, 4Kuwait and Hirshleifers. Prices range from $680 to $910 at current exchange rates.

“The day of your marriage is the most special of a women’s life,” says Djanguirov. “It has been my dream to beautify [a bride’s] foot with a creation that would be romantic, but most importantly, comfortable — not to suffer on this particular day.”

White options range from whimsical bowed satin stilettos (the La Romantique and the La Delicate) to sleek exotic sandals and pumps such as the L’Amazone and the L’Audacieuse, done in crocodile or python for brides looking for something with a little more bite.

And, the designer explained, versatility is key. “Our creations are shoes that you will not put in a box after the big day, but can always be ready to wear with jeans or pants afterward,” said Djanguirov, also noting the growing trend toward footwear exposure when walking down the aisle. “I’m thinking of those brides who are not just wearing a long dress. I believe that style has changed for the bridal [market].  It has become more fashion-oriented and certainly more modern.” With that in mind, Olgana Paris also offers styles in an au courant blush shade.

The star of the 10-piece collection (and Djanguirov’s favorite pair) is the La Piece Unique heel, which features more than 180 leather flowers on each shoe, making a bouquet redundant.

For her own wedding, the designer shared that she would wear the La Délicate. “It’s so elegant and refined,” she said.

Meet Olgana Paris: France’s Most Elegant New Shoe Label

“The history of Paris and haute couture inspire everything I do,” said Olga Molbieva Djanguirov, founder and designer of new women’s footwear label Olgana Paris. Started in 2014, the line, which specializes in the type of formalwear details usually reserved for custom creations — think accordion pleating, intricate appliqué work and bespoken bows — has been quickly scooped up by top retailers such as Dover Street Market and Barneys.

Indeed, Alberto Oliveros, buying manager of Level Shoe District, told Footwear News this “couture approach” and “impeccable technique” is what convinced him to pick up the collection from its inception.

Instagram Photo

Djanguirov’s eye for precision comes from a rigorous upbringing in Russia before her family moved to France. “I always loved fashion, but my mother said I had to study medicine first,” said the Moscow-born designer, who cited Francesco Russo and Azzedine Alaïa as names she admires. “I never practiced [medicine], though, because this other world always had my heart.”

After studying at École du Louvre, Djanguirov went to China to learn how shoes are made. She now manufactures in Parrabiago, Italy, with her collection retailing from $638 and up. For spring ’16, the label debuted a White Tie bridal offering.

While the designer believes her silk, exotic leather and fur designs could easily be paired with a “le smoking” jacket or “le jeans and T-shirt,” they also call to mind the glamorous champagne-drenched world of ballrooms, diamonds and heaps of caviar. It makes good sense then that due to demand Djanguirov also recently introduced a White Tie bridal collection.

Instagram Photo

“I don’t think many people are doing this kind of special, extremely refined style anymore,” she conceded of her intricate stilettos, pumps and sandals. Olgana Paris has already been noticed by discerning customers such as Céline Dion Natalie Portman, for whom Djanguirov said she would gladly remake her shoes to be vegan: “She’s the type of elegant woman I am appealing to.”

Is This Kirsten Dunst’s New Favorite Shoe Brand?

Kirsten Dunst seems to have found a new favorite shoe brand: Parisian up-and-comer Olgana Paris.

The “Fargo” actress was spotted wearing Olgana on Wednesday evening, for a second time this month, at the Elle Women in Television event in Los Angeles. She wore the La Sensuelle heel, which is available at Barneys New York.

On Jan. 11, Dunst, who won a Critic’s Choice Award last week, wore the La Pièce Unique heel to the AFI awards, also in L.A.

The "Fargo" actress wore another Olgana style earlier this month.

Olga Djanguirov, a former art dealer and the designer behind Olgana Paris, said the brand’s relationship with Dunst was forged through the actress’ styling team, Nina and Clare Hallworth, who purchased the La Piece Unique style at Maxfield. “After that, we formed a relationship with Kirsten,” she explained.

The designer added, “Kirsten is really talented, we love her style and personality. She is a woman with good taste who pays huge attention to details. We believe she represents the Olgana spirit, an elegant mix between chic and sophistication.”

Celine Dion, Miranda Cosgrove and Sasha Alexander are a few of the other big names who have worn the brand — which is also sold at Moda Operandi — in the past few weeks.

In other Olgana news, the brand recently debuted a bridal collection for spring 2016.

The Mood: Uniform dressing.

The shoes: Each season, designer Olgana Djanguirov chooses a pillar of style to dissect and revive via her ultra feminine, intricate shoes. Last season it was the tuxedo. For fall, she was fixated on the art of the uniform, from military to other areas of service. With formal army attire featuring so heavily in fashion this season, it was a well-timed theme.

Handmade French golden medallions decorated satin pumps in regalia hues of vermillion, royal blue and camouflage green. The menswear side of this equation could have been explored more, but that’s not really in her womanly wheelhouse. Elsewhere, crisp shirting panels formed the uppers of stiletto sandals.

Straying from the theme were block-heeled sandals splashed in fox fur and pearls. Pert bow ties formed neat rows on the backs of steep pumps too.

The verdict: Djanguirov’s business is on a roll, with new accounts from Level Shoe District and Barney’s New York plus a growing celebrity fan base. In a fashion world achingly concerned with cool, she is refreshingly fixated on glamour and couture flourishes.

Olgana’s Celebrity Following

It’s worth noting that though freebies are coming at them from every angle, the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Portia de Rossi and Diane Kruger are purchasing her shoes in multiples.

“The biggest compliment is that they actually buy them,” said Djanguirov of her über-feminine creations. Speaking of Dunst and Kruger, the designer continued “they both have very refined taste, I was flattered they chose my shoes.”

The Russian-born founder is certainly on a celebrity roll, after recently creating a custom vegan pair of her satin stilettos for Natalie Portman and discovering that Céline Dion, her personal favorite, is also a fan. “For me, she is just the ultimate.”

Call it a shoe rush. In the past few years, the footwear world has seen a storm of new names aiming — and often succeeding — to disrupt the market with innovative designs and serious, insatiable ambition.

Be it through clever influencer marketing, powerful alliances or a tumbleweed of social media momentum, this latest generation of can-do designers is no longer toying in obscurity or waiting to be discovered. Instead, these talents are taking charge of their own destiny and plowing through obstacles along the way, regardless of age, background of provenance.

Nicolò Beretta, Amina Muaddi & Paula Cademartori.

Nicolò Beretta, Amina Muaddi & Paula Cademartori.

Take our cover subjects: whiz kid Nicolò Beretta of Giannico, overachiever Paula Cademartori (whose popular eponymous handbag label recently launched shoes) and multitasker Amina Muaddi of Oscar Tiye, who also teaches shoemaking and is behind Alexandre Vauthier’s new footwear collection.

Oscar Tiye

Oscar Tiye boots as worn by Amina Muaddi.

All three of these rising shoe stars are based in Milan, a town not known for easily welcoming young upstarts into its vaulted shoe cognoscenti. But no matter. What they all have in common is an unbridled passion for what they do, the ability to connect with an increasingly novelty-hungry consumer and a singular, saleable point of view. Without garish logos or obvious branding, the Italian Beretta, Brazilian Cademartori and Jordanian/Romanian Muaddi have carved out a global identity the industry (and top retailers far and wide) have found impossible to ignore.

Footwear News brought them together for the second annual Emerging Talent special issue, shot in Italy’s footwear capital. The location, Erastudio, a buzzy gallery housed in a historic apartment in Milan’s artsy La Brea neighborhood, was a prime backdrop to capture these equally experimental subjects.

Dora Teymur

Dora Teymur at London’s Willow House.

Of course, there are many other ports of call on FN’s radar when talent-scouting. Turkish native Dora Teymur, pictured above, was photographed at London’s Willow House after a delayed passport prevented his travel. But that doesn’t make him any less worthy of the spotlight, demure and idiosyncratic as he may be. Perhaps more than anyone on this list, the U.K.-based designer has had a remarkable year based on the androgynous élan of his influential loafers and Cuban heels, which he himself wears with notable aplomb.

Throughout these pages is a selection of incredibly diverse, deserving designers. And with the right mix of tireless work, business savvy and good instincts, each stands to be a footwear force. As disparate as they might be, what unites them is an old-school dedication to craft. In our increasingly digital climate, it’s refreshing to learn that while they embrace new technology faster than you can share a Snap, the Emerging Talent class of 2016 cherishes relationships with their factories above all. In more ways than one, they prove the enduring value of being hands-on.

Olgana Paris is launching a capsule menswear collection.

It comprises four styles. A lace-up tuxedo/dress shoe, an elasticated tuxedo boot and a loafer will come in midnight blue and black (each of which will have a contrast grosgrain trim in black and blue, respectively) in both patent leather and velvet finishes. There will also be a tasseled dress slipper done in a suede/cashmere mélange that comes midnight blue, classic beige and a warm gray.

“For when you want to change but have only a small pocket so you can fold them up,” said the Russia-born, Paris-based designer Olga Djanguirov, who splits her time between working on her line and consulting on contemporary art.

Of her debut foray into menswear, she cited Coco Chanel as an influence. “She was revolutionary as every story came from a mix of masculine and feminine,” Djanguirov said. “When I started my women’s collection, I stole from menswear”  — she launched her label last year with a tuxedo-based collection that riffed off gentlemen’s formalwear such as black bow ties and dress shirts — “so now I need to give something back to the man.”

The line will preview during Paris Fashion Week alongside the women’s collection but will launch officially in January.

Besides testing out the market, there’s another reason for this early preview. The capsule can also be ordered in women’s sizes; Djanguirov tapped one of the few Italian factories that makes footwear for both sexes – a second-generation shoemaker in Milan.

On Tuesday, Kardashian was joined by her mother, Kris Jenner, and sister Kourtney Kardashian. Good American co-founder and business partner Emma Grede was also on hand as she and Kardashian addressed the crowd.

“I think what was so crucial to Emma and I, is creating a designer denim that was still trendy and cool and edgy that went into a variety of sizes that for some reason, the market feels like they don’t need to produce, which is really unfair,” said Kardashian, according to People.

Good American is a denim brand made in Los Angeles and is designed for a curvier shape — available now in sizes 0-24.

Cara Delevingne Matches Her Shoes With Her New Haircut

A dramatic new haircut often calls for a style update. Case in point: Cara Delvingne. Since she went for that fierce new platinum crop, she’s been upping her fashion game with some similarly sharp ensembles.

Out and about on Wednesday in Manhattan, where she is promoting her new science fiction movie, “Valerian and The City Of A Thousand Planets,” she teamed a striped Brunello Cucinelli blazer with a pair of white drainpipe pants by Redemption, complete with military-style buttons all the way up the leg.

Cara wears Olgana Paris L'Audacieuse Pumps.

Delevingne in made-to-order Olgana Paris L’Audacieuse Pumps.

Color-coordinated to a fault, her new locks perfectly matched not only her outfit but also her pointed white stilettos by celebrity-favorite footwear label Olgana Paris. Kim Kardashian West, Khloé Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Jennifer Lawrence, Chrissy Teigen and friends are also fans.

A skinny pant-and-stiletto combo is never the most flattering, but these demi-flares, with their stylishly asymmetric ankle, solved that issue admirably. And, unlike a full flare, they also ensured a prime view of those python-skin pumps, which would otherwise have been a wasted opportunity. This could be the stirrup -pant update we’ve all been waiting for.

Olgana Paris L'Audacieuse Pumps

However, while we hope Delevingne’s sharp new look is here to stay, it turns out the haircut is only an interim measure. She’s going to shave her head for her next role.

Olgana Paris is the gift that keeps giving. The brand continues to diversify, this time adding its second bridal collection to its lineup.

Designer Olgana Djanguirov created a bridal line with a selection of romantic designs for the modern bride. Featuring her signature feminine yet edgy styles, the bridal shoes offer unique details, including whimsical bows and exotic materials. Price points for this collection ranges from $500 to $700.

For the bride looking for that perfectly white satin shoe, Olgana Paris’ La Garconne T-strap pumps may do the trick. And the shoes include a white bow-tie, which can be worn to match your groom.

Only three years old, the Paris-based brand has already garnered attention from the Kardashian family and Jennifer Lawrence. Chrissy Teigen, Cara Delevingne, Gabrielle Union, Emma Roberts and Eva Longoria are among the other celebrities who favor the brand.

“Every time one of the sisters wears the brand, I get 20 e-mails from people asking to order the style,”  Djanguirov said on the Kardashian effect.

Followers of the Cannes Film Festival might remember Bella Hadid’s show-stopping red-carpet look from last year’s festival. She wore a super-revealing red dress with Giuseppe Zanotti strappy sandals. She was certainly the center of attention on the red carpet, and it looks like she has no plans of shying away from that this year.

The model arrived in Nice, France, on Tuesday wearing a silver Marc Jacobs jacket with coordinating boots. Just a day later, she was changed into a glamorous look for a beachside lunch with fellow model Hailey Baldwin.

Bella Hadid’s arrival at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival was one that turned heads, including her own.

The supermodel stepped out in a strapless gown by Alexandre Vauthier that had a split from the top of the thigh down to the floor-length hem, and she revealed more than she intended when she greeted Susan Sarandon.

While planting a kiss on the actress, Hadid’s nude underwear was exposed, and it happened again when she turned her body for photographers to capture the back of her dress.

With all of the posing and body maneuvering, Hadid stopped and looked down at her chest before making an adjustment to the bodice of the gown — better to not suffer another exposure.

Still, the look was elegant and gave her ample opportunity to show off a chic pair of Olgana Paris sandals.

She was joined by her father, Mohamed Hadid, who helped her ascend the staircase at the 70th iteration of the film festival.

Ascending the grand staircase at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival is no easy task, but some famous faces have managed the feat in the most dramatic way — with a memorable style statement.

Kicking off this year’s festival on Wednesday at the Palais des Festivals, Bella Hadid looked chic when she was escorted by her father, Mohamed Hadid, while clad in a gown by Alexandre Vauthier and shoes by Olgana Paris. Also taking part in the fashion parade was actress Chompoo Araya, who looked ethereal in a white Ralph & Russo dress that featured a long feathered cape and train.

Last year Jourdan Dunn created a stunning moment when she glided up the staircase with a handler holding her gown, and supermodel Petra Nemcova also shared the red carpet while clad in a red dress that inspired a spin in her heels.

At the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Uma Thurman looked chic in a bright yellow dress that had fabric billowing in the wind, and two years earlier Diane Kruger nodded court style when she strutted in a structured gown in the rain.

In 2009 Dita Von Teese took her Christian Louboutin pumps down the red carpet in a strapless black and white dress, and in 2007 she stepped out in a floor-length icy gray ensemble.
